The 12th International Conference of the UISPP Commission on Flint Mining in Pre- and Protohistoric Times, ‘Excavating in the Land of the Devil: Past and Current Research on Prehistoric Flint Mines’ took place on May 6–8th 2025, hosted by Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, Worthing (West Sussex, England) and English Heritage Grime’s Graves and Grime’s Graves Vistors Centre (Norfolk, East of England).
The conference was dedicated to exploring the rich history of research on prehistoric flint mining. Over recent years, many flint mines have reached a centenary or more since their discovery. The conference looked back over the last 150 years of flint mine exploration but also examined the present and future of research. The event brought together leading archaeologists, historians, and researchers to discuss key discoveries, methodological advancements, and the evolving understanding of prehistoric flint mining practices. Participants had the opportunity to share insights from excavations in the 'Land of the Devil' and to contribute their experience from diverse research approaches, including archaeological, historical, geological, and anthropological perspectives.
