From May 6 to 8, 2025, the Commission ‘Flint Mining in Prehistoric and Protohistoric Times’ convened at the Worthing Museum and Art Gallery for a conference titled ‘Excavating in the Land of the Devil: Past and Current Research on Prehistoric Flint Mines’. This event was organized on behalf of the commission by Dagmara H. Werra (Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology, Polish Academy of Sciences), Jon Bączkowski (University of Southampton), and Anne Teather (Past Participate / Bournemouth University). The event featured 32 participants, 21 presentations, and four poster presentations that sparked lively discussions. On Wednesday afternoon, the participants explored Cissbury Hill, a site featuring a Neolithic Flint Mine and an Iron Age Hillfort. On the last day, they undertook an excursion to the Grime's Graves Neolithic Flint Mining site. There was also a post-conference trip to Stonehenge and Avebury. Also during the meeting, elections were held for the new board of the comission. A report summarizing the conference is planned for publication in the Journal of the Lithic Studies Society.
